About Afro Cafe
Afro Café first arrived on the scene in 2004 and is now in its fifth season on SABC 2 on a Tuesday night at 10pm.
Since the very beginning our concept was to provide the Afro Café viewer with the experience of a night out, where you are able to enjoy the very best musical entertainment and have an intimate connection with musicians through their insightful discussion with the programme’s host Pepsi Pokane.
In 2008 Afro Café is broadening our bouquet of artists; from being primarily a jazz show, we are now exploring more South African adult contemporary and popular music.
Besides episodes that are themed around events or special occasions in the calendar such as Christmas or Women’s Day, Afro Cafe has two predominant types of episodes:
Special
The Special episode pays homage to our “Legend” artist who has reached a level in their career where they are respected as having achieved the ultimate success in their music.
The entire show is centred around the artist, with three performances and an in-depth interview spanning their entire life and career.
Main and Limelight
This episode gives an established artist a position on the show as the headline or Main performer, with two performances and an interview on the couch.
The Limelight in this episode is the supporting act and will open the show with two performances and have a possible interview on stage. We reserve this Limelight position for performers who are relatively new on the scene. However they are established in terms of having at least one album, a music video, and are signed to a legitimate management company.
Our passion is to bring top class live music to local communities and to get in touch with our viewers all over the country. To make this happen, several times a year the whole team packs up and leaves our base in Jo’burg in order to set up the Afro Cafe stage and lounge in another part of the country for a few episodes.
Afro Cafe viewers get more than just musical entertainment - we regularly feature sms competitions where lucky winners walk away with CDs, DVDs and Afro Cafe branded items such as CD pouches and camp chairs.
There’s plenty in the pipeline at Afro Cafe, so keep watching the show and visiting the site...
